The Green Compass has been developed out of an existing tool, AISHE  – which stands for Auditing Instrument for Higher Education. Instead of higher education, this tool focusses on (pre) vocational educational training. It was developed under the guidance of prof. dr. ir. Arjen Wals of Wageningen University

At two VET schools (Nordwin College and Wellant College) this tool was tried out in detail, with several teams. As it turned out to be highly effective and practical, more schools got involved like Clusius College in Alkmaar, The Netherlands and Aerus Group, Almere, The Netherlands.

During a National Program for Education and Research (NRO), called ‘ The whole school looking through green glasses’,  this tool has been used to measure differences between schools, and to stimulate teams to implement sustainable development structurally.
